Job Summary

STATEMENT OF JOB

Advocates are responsible for implementing the scopes of services of the Statewide Advocacy Program and advocacy-related activities for The Arc Tennessee related to advocacy, education, and public awareness for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities and their families.

Job Responsibilities

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

 

General

  • Uphold the mission, positions and values of The Arc of Tennessee
  • Possess a general knowledge of The Arc as a national, state and local organization
  • Comply with fiscal, legal, and agency (The Arc) requirements
  • Role model behaviors that reflect trust, competence, vision, and inspiration
  • Involve others in planning or problem solving
  • Expand and upgrade knowledge and skills through on-the-job, program-sponsored, or outside educational opportunities
  • Seek out opportunities that expand the scope of relevant projects offered by The Arc TN

 

Specific Job Duties

  • Provide information and referrals as appropriate to individuals seeking assistance
  • Provide technical assistance as appropriate to individuals needing support to navigate the complex system of services for individuals with I/DD and their families including but not limited to early intervention, education, VR, DDA, TennCare, DHS, DOMH, AAAD, and SSA/SSI
  • Provide direct advocacy services for individuals with disabilities as appropriate when faced with issues related to civil/human rights/quality of life; service access; health and safety; legal; and conservatorship
  • Maintain documentation of activities related to information and referral, technical assistance and direct advocacy and other documentation as requested
  • Maintain involvement in various state and local committees, councils, task forces, etc. that impact people with I/DD and their families
  • Attend meetings as required
  • Actively promote self-advocacy for individuals with I/DD
  • Support other activities of The Arc TN such as family meetings, conferences, etc.
  • Other duties as assigned.

 

Reporting

  • Complete monthly workbook
  • Complete monthly work plan
  • Complete all reports as required

Qualifications

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Minimum high school diploma or GED
  • Bachelor’s degree preferred (experience may be substituted for education)
  • At least two years’ experience (either professional or personal) working with individuals with disabilities
  • Ability to work independently on a variety of projects
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Team Player
  • Computer literate
  • Reliable transportation
